Scene break down
Summary-
The scene is a very short scene at the end of the play, it's purpose is to create a resolution for the audience and let them know the truth. Couzin is trying the persuade 1st twin to admit she knew about Steve sexually assaulting Angel all along which she did. She only responds when it's in her favour and when she's getting money out of admitting it.
Who?
1st twin, Angel and Brotha's mum. She has neglected her two black children from her previous relationship with Brian because of her current partner Steve and their white children. She stayed with Steve even though he abused her daughter. She is very self centred and manipulative, she only does things that benefit herself.
We had a conversation about the mentality of 1st twin in the scene. 1st twin has many stakes in the scene, she wants money to keep her home but to get it she has to tell the truth about Steve and Angel which would ruin her relationship with Angel forever and end any possible future. This leads to a mental conflict and she chooses to go with money over her child. There is the question of whether she cared about Angel knowing since she already rejected her but Angel is still her child and she wouldn't want to loose her forever. We also learn Steve left her and she is sad about that which made me question how she could stay with the man she knew assaulted her daughter, how weak a person must she be to be able to be manipulated by him that much. The scene shows how 1st twin is a self centred money oriented monster.
What time is it?
The play is not time specific but the scene is towards the end of the play so it would probably be later on in the day.
Where am I?
At a family meeting. I haven't seen my family in years and we are discussing my daughter being assaulted by my husband. It's a very unusual situation and place for me to be in. I am very uncomfortable in this place.
What surrounds me?
I am with Couzin, my nephew who I haven't seen in a long time and am not very close to. There would be lots of distance and a lack of comfort in their relationship but I need money from him. Angel is also in the circle which in my opinion completely changes the scene as it adds a higher stake that if 1st twin tells the truth Angel is there and will have to hear it and she will loose Angel forever.
What do I want?
I want money from Couzin to get my life back to how it used to be and not loose my house.
What do I do to get it?
I manipulate and flatter Couzin, I also question Couzin. I try to conceal the truth but to get the money i have to give in and tell the truth.
What are my obstacles?
Loosing Angel forever.
